The Northern Ireland Biomedical Engineering Society (NIBES), which was constituted in 1979, was founded in order to provide a forum for communication between all those interested in biomedical engineering. Since its establishment the society has been involved in building up a strong biomedical engineering community within Northern Ireland. Currently NIBES has an active membership from a variety of backgrounds including, academia, industry, government and clinically related professions and currently promotes diverse interests in a range of areas, including: • Medical Imaging • Cardiovascular devices • Biomaterials • Rehabilitation • Orthopedics • Medical Informatics • Modelling/Virtual Engineering • Dental • Cell/Molecular Biology
The key aims of NIBES are • To promote biomedical engineering • To provide a forum for communication between all those interested in biomedical engineering • To encourage collaborations within the biomedical engineering community (locally, nationally and internationally) • To promote the teaching of biomedical engineering to undergraduate and postgraduate students • To provide meetings to encourage the dissemination of information and education in matters related to biomedical engineering.

The Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare (MATCH) is a well-established research collaboration between four leading UK universities (Birmingham, Brunel, Nottingham & Ulster) and a cohort of industrial partners, also supported by stakeholders from the NHS and other public sector organisations. MATCH, funded since 2003 by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and partner subscriptions, provides a critical research mass in the field of health technology assessment (HTA) in its widest sense, bringing together expertise in health economics, engineering and social sciences.
Through the translation of its research MATCH supports both companies across the UK healthcare technology sector and user communities, delivering methods and tools to assess the value of medical devices from concept through to mature product. MATCH aims to transform the medical device sector through improved decision-making, so that companies bring better products to market more quickly and less expensively, whilst healthcare providers are able to adopt products with confidence more rapidly. By engaging with UK advisory bodies.
MATCH is also influencing policy, and, through its work with procurement organisations, has provided the NHS with better methods for buying technology. The focus is on making good decisions early in product development and improving processes for adoption of innovations. In support of this, over the past seven years MATCH has researched evidence-gathering strategies, early-stage health economics, methods for eliciting the needs of users, the link between clinical demand and business process, and investment decisions.
Vector Scientific was established as a laboratory distribution company in Belfast in April 1990. The main customer base at this time was the hospital clinical laboratory market. Over the next five years the company grew and expanded into university and government laboratories with a more varied selection of products for their customers.
In 1995 Vector Scientific was acquired by United Drug PLC along with Novapath, a scientific company based in Dublin. These acquisitions meant that United Drug could significantly expand their business in the medical and scientific equipment sector in both the north and south of Ireland. Following this acquisition Vector Scientific moved to premises on the Ravenhill Road in Belfast to join Ulster Anaesthetics Limited, another United Drug company.
In 1999, due to continued growth, both companies moved to a new purpose built facility based in Moneyreagh on the outskirts of Belfast. The 20,000 sq.ft. office and warehouse building provided the scope for further expansion of the company. Later in the same year Primacare Services was acquired by United Drug and joined Vector Scientific and Ulster Anaesthetics in their new facilities.
Vector Scientific is today the largest independent supplier to the NHS laboratory market. They supply a wide range of quality products to the NHS, university, government and industrial laboratories, representing a wide range of global manufacturers.

Particular Sciences was founded by Sean Quilty in 1989 to provide technical support in material characterisation for chemists, biologists, researchers and industrialists in Ireland. This was a niche business to fill a gap in the scientific infrastructure inside Ireland. We started with a very small customer base. The company has steadily grown with the market in Ireland (the famous Celtic tiger) and also grew with its principals. We now service over 200 companies in pharmachem, minerals, food, pigments and increasingly in research with nanotechnology and biotech at the top of the list. And we represent a group of specialist companies, leaders in their technologies.
Particular Sciences has been appointed the new distributor for Qsense, the leading manufacturer of acoustic resonance instruments to study molecular binding on surfaces. Full details will be posted shortly under Biolin Scientific in the Manufacturers pages.
